On Tuesday, November 19th, join NIB at Slumbrew for a hands on class all about how to make bread using spent grain from the brewing process. Spent grain accounts for ~85% of a brewery’s total waste. During the brewing process, the grain loses its sugar content and nourishes the yeast. Because many breweries recycle spent grain as animal feed, organic fertilizer, and even fuel to power brewery operations, the brewing industry has earned a reputation of being environmentally friendly. Somerville Brewing Company, AKA “Slumbrew,” salvages the spent grain from the beer brewing process at little to no additional cost. By introducing food items made with spent grain to its product line and its menu, Slumbrew demonstrates its creativity, resourcefulness, and commitment to sustainability.
Class includes:
1 beer token to enjoy a pint during class
Bread and butter sampling with different types of butters and jams.
45 minute lesson to make spent grain
One finished oven-ready loaf to bake when you get home.
Extra spent grain for your freezer and recipes to make more bread
